Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful times in a woman’s life. But what if you could capture that beauty in a way that feels like a dream? That’s what an underwater photoshoot can do.

Imagine floating in soft light, your baby bump surrounded by gentle waves. It’s quiet. Peaceful. Timeless. And yes—it’s real.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about having an underwater maternity session. We’ll talk about what to wear, how to prepare, and why this style of photography is so special. Don’t worry—it’s not as hard as it sounds. In fact, it might be the most relaxing thing you do during your pregnancy.

What Is an Underwater Photoshoot?

An underwater photoshoot is a portrait session that takes place in a swimming pool. It’s just like a regular photo session, but instead of standing on the ground, you’re floating in water.

Many moms-to-be choose this type of shoot because it feels magical. The water lets you move in ways you can’t on land. Your dress flows. Your hair floats. Your baby bump takes center stage in the most graceful way.

This kind of shoot is often done in a warm, clean, private pool—usually indoors. A trained photographer takes your pictures using special waterproof gear. You don’t have to be a great swimmer. You just have to relax and trust the process.

Why Do a Maternity Underwater Photoshoot?

You may already be thinking about maternity photos. But why take them underwater? Here are a few reasons to consider:

1. You’ll Look Like Art

The water makes your body look soft and smooth. Fabrics float around you. Light reflects off the water’s surface. The final photos often look like paintings.

2. It’s Peaceful and Calming

Being in the water can take pressure off your back and joints. It’s soothing—especially during pregnancy.

3. It’s Unique

Most maternity photos are taken in fields, parks, or studios. This is something totally different. Your friends and family will be amazed when they see the images.

4. Celebrate Your Strength

Swimming while pregnant—even gently—is a symbol of strength. These photos show how graceful and powerful your body really is.

Is an Underwater Photoshoot Safe for Pregnant Women?

Yes—when done right, an underwater photoshoot is very safe. At Edge Underwater Photography, we take every precaution to make sure you feel secure and supported.

Here’s how we keep it safe:

  • The pool is kept warm (usually between 86–90°F), which is gentle on the body.
  • A trained assistant or nurse is nearby the whole time.
  • We never rush you—there are breaks between every pose.
  • You’ll never go deeper than a few feet below the surface.

You do not need to hold your breath for a long time. Most of our best shots happen right near the surface. You’ll only go under for a few seconds at a time—and we guide you the whole way.

Note: We recommend these sessions for women between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. Always check with your doctor first.

What Should I Wear for My Underwater Maternity Photos?

This is the fun part! What you wear will help create the mood of your photos.

Here are some ideas:

  • Flowy gowns: Long, lightweight dresses that move with the water look stunning. Fabrics like chiffon or tulle are best.
  • Bodysuits or swimwear: These show off your bump while keeping things simple and elegant.
  • Sheer fabrics: Want something dreamy and artistic? Sheer fabrics can be wrapped and floated around you to create a one-of-a-kind look.

We’ll help you choose a style that feels right. Many clients borrow from our studio wardrobe, so you don’t have to buy anything new unless you want to.

How to Prepare for Your Underwater Photoshoot

Don’t worry—this isn’t like training for a swim meet. But a little prep helps things go smoothly.

Before the Shoot:

  • Drink water: Being hydrated helps with energy and comfort.
  • Eat a light meal: A small snack can help you feel steady in the water.
  • Skip lotion or oil: These can make your skin slippery in the pool.

At the Session:

  • Arrive early: We’ll go over the plan and help you feel calm.
  • Stretch a little: Gentle movement helps your body relax in the water.
  • Trust the team: Our photographer will guide your poses and timing.

We’ll go slow. You’ll never be left alone in the water. And we’ll check in with you between every set of photos.

What Will the Photos Look Like?

The final images will take your breath away. Some look dreamy and soft, while others feel bold and powerful. Every session is different, because every mom is different.

We’ll go over your vision before the shoot, so we know exactly what kind of feeling you want. Whether you’re looking for elegance, mystery, or just something beautiful and fun—we’ve got you.

You’ll receive high-quality, edited photos that you can print, frame, or share online. These are not your average bump pictures. These are keepsakes you’ll treasure forever.

Do I Need to Know How to Swim?

Nope. You don’t have to be a swimmer. You just need to be comfortable being in the shallow end of a warm pool.

Many poses are done with your feet touching the bottom or with gentle floating just below the surface. You’ll never be asked to dive or swim laps.

And remember: we’re with you the whole time. A spotter (usually a nurse or trained helper) is nearby at every moment.

Can I Bring Someone with Me?

Yes! Many moms bring their partner, sister, or best friend. This can help you feel supported and relaxed.

We also offer the option for partner or couple photos in the water. These can be very romantic or artistic, depending on your style.

How Long Does the Session Take?

Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours total. That includes:

  • Changing outfits
  • Going over poses
  • Getting used to the water
  • Taking breaks between sets

Most of our best shots are taken in short bursts. You won’t be underwater the whole time. Think of it as a gentle, creative experience—not a workout.

What Happens After the Shoot?

After your session, we’ll go through the photos and select the best ones. Then we’ll professionally edit them to bring out the light, color, and beauty of each moment.

Within 2–3 weeks, you’ll get to view your images and choose your favorites for prints or wall art. We also offer albums, digital files, and custom designs.

This is more than just a photo shoot. It’s a celebration of your journey into motherhood—and the art you’ve created by simply being you.

Final Thoughts: Make a Splash with Your Maternity Photos

Pregnancy is a season you’ll never get back. An underwater photoshoot lets you capture that time in a way that’s soft, strong, and truly unforgettable.

You don’t need to be a model or a mermaid. You just need to show up, trust us, and let the water work its magic.

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, your story deserves to be told in a way that’s as unique as you are.
